On the 8th of November, 2022, Sea+Earth was created by two school-friends in a boarding-house common room. It was only a rough, rudimentary framework of a movement yet to take shape, but it established the core ideologies of what Sea+Earth would come to represent.
The driving ambition behind Sea+Earth is to create change; from the extinction of rare species to the destruction of natural habitats, it has never been so clear that action needs to be taken urgently. Alaskan polar bears starve in the fastest-warming place on Earth; by 2050 it is projected that there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish, and environmental degradation has never been so high or widespread. These are the things which motivate us to do the things we do, and take the action which we take, in order to play the biggest part possible in the prevention and reversal of such tragedies.
We understand that these issues aren't merely solvable by the actions of one organisation or person, however we do believe they can be resolved through a change in mindset: over the past few decades, a great division has formed between humans and the environment. Ideologically spurred by the promise of economic growth, modern society has neglected the effect which it has on nature and the environment, forming a deep crevasse between the two of global warming, environmental degradation and the genocide of wonderful species. This is why 50% of our profits go to nature conservation in the UK, as we want to ensure that all species are protected and have space to live.
We hope that Sea+Earth can inspire others to appreciate nature as much as we do and help them to treat the world around them with greater care and respect, as we believe that the only way to tackle such environmental issues is to change the mindset and attitude of society. If the average person can be inspired to take thirty seconds to recycle their waste; turn off their lights; buy less clothes, then a massive difference can be made. From such small action, greater action will follow too: with increased pressure for sustainability and environmental responsibility due to a shift in public opinion, governments will have no choice but to act in the right way.
One thing is clear: if we all gave a few minutes a day to appreciate the natural beauty and wonder around us, and to think about our actions, then positive environmental change will undoubtedly follow, and the Earth will be a better place for all of its inhabitants. We welcome you on our journey towards a sustainable planet.
